West German Protestants have contributed a total of 60,000 deutschemarks ($15,000) to aid archeological excavations near Shavei Zion, a cooperative settlement in northern Israel, it was reported here today by the Israeli Mission here. The contributions were in response to an appeal by Dr. Heinrich Grueber, the Protestant clergyman who testified against Adolf Eichmann at the latter’s recent trial in Jerusalem.
The funds will be used for the excavation and restoration of the one of the oldest churches in the area, probably dating back to the fourth century of the Common Era. Dr. Grueber decided on the appeal during his last visit to Israel when he visited Shavei Zion settlement, whose members are mostly former residents of Rexingen in Wuertemberg.
