The state of Hesse reported today that a total of 186,000,000 marks was paid out in compensation to Nazi victims during 1957 as compared with 141,000,000 in the previous year. The sum of 469,000,000 marks has been paid out since compensation payments started, the announcement said. A German mark is approximately 25 cents.
In Frankfurt it was announced today that the city’s Goethe Medal will be given to Prof. Martin Buber, Jewish philosopher who is now celebrating his 80th birthday in Israel Prof. Buber taught at Frankfurt University before the Nazis came to power.
