The municipality of Erlangen resolved today to destroy the statue erected in 1875, on the Luipoldplatz, in honor of the popular Jewish doctor and teacher, Professor Jacob Herz.
Professor Herz was born in Bayreuth in 1816 and died in Erlangen in 1871. He became a teacher in the medical school of the University of Erlangen and under the then liberal regime became a full professor of medicine, an unusual feat in those days.
He was greatly loved and admired and when he died, the city of Erlangen, where few Jews were ever allowed to live, erected a statue in his honor.
