Under the cloud of the current revelations at Washington of the forces struggling to seize the leadership of the eight million German-Americans in the United states, the German American Congress opened here today.
There hundred and fifty delegates from affiliates of the congress in twelve states were at hand on the opening of the convention.
The Nazi element, fresh from its victory over the moderates and liberals in the German American Conference at New York, were only slightly in evidence and it was apparent that the congressional probe of propagandist activities sponsored by the German Nazi party had caused a decided shift on the part of Nazi strategists who had been expected to make a determined bid for control of the congress.
Among the issues expected to be brought up are the status of Jewish leaders in vereins throughout the country; support of the DAWA, the counter-boycott movement directed against the Jews, and a protest to the Government against the continuance of the anti-Nazi boycott.
