The Bundestag has given its approval to a bill providing for West Germany’s adhesion to the Convention on the Declaration of Death of Missing Persons, which was adopted by the United Nations in 1950. Although Germany is not a member of the United Nations, she was asked two years ago by the UN Economic and Social Council to ratify this international agreement.
The Convention provides for the issuance of declarations of death for persons whose last residence was in Europe, Asia or Africa and who disappeared in the war years in consequence, inter alia, of racial and religious persecution. Such declarations issued in any of the signatory states will be recognized by all other signatories. An International Bureau for Declarations of Death, equipped with a central registry, has been established by the United Nations in Geneva.
