For the first time, Germany has made good the threat of Bavarian Refugee Commissioner Theodor Oberlaender that Jewish displaced persons coming here “illegally, ” without valid visas and residence permits, would be deported.
It was learned here today that two former Polish Jews, Mordecai Grommer and Shachno Gersten, who had returned to Austria from Israel and then infiltrated into Germany, were arrested and given a prison sentence. After serving it, they were taken to the Austrian border by the German police. Other than “illegal entry,” there were no charges against them. It is understood that they are being held in a jail at Salzburg, and will be sent back to Israel, via Italy, by the Austrian authorities.
