Professor Ludwig Erhard, West Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs, agreed here yesterday that the European Economic Community should establish a special commission to study Israel’s participation in the European Common Market, it was announced today.
Mr. Eshkol has spent a busy weekend here, conferring on Israel’s desire to participate in the Euromart, first with Belgium’s Foreign Minister, Paul Henri-SpaaK, then with Prof. Erhard. In both conferences, the Israeli Cabinet member stressed the desire of the Israel Government to open early negotiations with the members of the EEC regarding Euromart participation.
M. Spaak once more expressed the understanding on this issue which the Belgian Government has consistently shown. Prof. Erhard emphasized West Germany’s interest in finding a practical and positive solution to the question of Israel’s relations with the Common Market. Mr. Eshkol was accompanied at his conferences, by Emile Najar, Israel’s Ambassador here, who is also Israel’s envoy to the EEC; and by Eliezer P. Shinnar, head of Israel’s mission to West Germany.
