The West German Government will take advantage of the escape clause in the reparations agreement with Israel which permits the Germans to reduce their payments to the equivalent of $60,000,000 annually beginning with April 1, this year, it was learned today from well informed sources.
The agreement provided that Germany might exercise the option of reducing payments from about $74,000,000 annually after two years, but it was assumed that this would be done only if Germany’s trade position deteriorated. In view of Germany’s extraordinary prosperity in the past year, the Israelis had expected that deliveries would continue on the basis originally set.
