A German loan to Jordan will facilitate expansion of Aqaba as a rival port to Israel’s seaport, Eilat, on the Gulf of Akaba, it was reported today from Amman.
During the next month, it was announced by the Jordan Government, West Germany will extend a loan of 1, 000, 000 pounds ($2, 800, 000) to Jordan to lengthen the Akaba port quay from about 540 to approximately 1, 200 feet to accommodate three small or two medium sized ships to be handled at the same time. Akaba is so near Eilat that the two ports are actually within sight of each other.
