Measures to prevent Norwegian Jews from reaching the Swedish frontier by train were taken by the Gestapo today following the assassination last week by three passengers, two of whom were Jews, of a Quisling frontier guard in a train on route to Sweden.
No longer trusting the Quisling police, the Gestapo has stationed its own guards at every railway station on the route from Oslo to the Swedish border. Beginning with today Gestapo agents will ride in all trains, examining the identification papers of each passenger.
The Quisling press in Norway today intensified its anti-Jewish campaign, predicting the deportation of all Jews from Norway in reprisal for the killing of the Quisling official. At the same time pro-Nazi newspapers reaching here today from Holland carry a warning issued by Rauther, the chief of the Gestapo there, stating that severe punishment will be meted out to all Dutchmen found guilty of sheltering Jews in order to help them escape deportation to eastern territories.
General Friedrich Christiansen, German military commander in Holland, was reported today to have received a flood of letters from Dutchmen protesting against the persecution of the Jews in Holland and asking that the deportation of Jews be halted. These Jews in Holland who are slates for deportations are first sent to special camps in the province of Drenthe. There, according to a report reaching here, they are sorted out according to age and professions and their ultimate destination is decided upon.
