The Gestapo, secret State police, today freed Rabbi Max Nussbaum, one of Berlin’s leading rabbis, arrested last week for undisclosed reasons. His four days’ detention was caused, it is believed, by remarks he made during the course of a New Year’s sermon delivered Sept. 18.
Two other Jewish leaders are still in custody at Gestapo headquarters in Alexanderplatz. They are Franz Meyer, executive head of the German Zionist Federation and Benno Cohn, council member of the Federation. Rabbi Emil Bernhard Cohn, Zionist leader and writer, was released last Saturday after he had been held for a week.
