Egyptian Foreign Minister Mourad Ghaleb said today his meeting with President Georges Pompidou had “certainly contributed” to promoting a political solution to the Middle East crisis. The Egyptian minister, who met with Pompidou this afternoon, described the meeting as “cordial” and said he transmitted to the French President a written message from Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. He did not divulge its contents.
Ghaleb said means of developing Franco-Egyptian cultural, economic, technical and scientific relations were also discussed. The Egyptian minister, who arrived here last night, also met with Foreign Minister Maurice Schumann and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Jean de Lepkowski. During the course of a luncheon given in the Egyptian envoy’s honor, Schumann said the meeting with Pompidou “will permit the formation of a base of action to resolve the Middle East conflict.”
Schumann said France continues to believe any agreement must be based on Security Council Resolution 242. “The only objective of French policy in the Middle East is the respect of the right of your country and that of your neighbors to develop economic and social independence,” Schumann said. After the luncheon, Lepkowski said France and Egypt had similar analyses on the Middle East.
