Dr. Stephen S. Wise, honorary president of the American Jewish Congress, who is now in Europe, and Bernard S. Deutsch, president, who will proceed to the continent shortly, have been commissioned to go to Geneva to make representations to the League of Nations to expand the Nansen passport system so that it will apply to Jews being expelled from Germany by the Nazis.
A decision to this effect was reached here at a special meeting of the American Jewish Congress called to discuss the expulsion of Eastern European Jewish families from Breslau, as reported last Friday in the Jewish Daily Bulletin.
“The situation created by the oppressive policy of the Hitler regime is on a par in its emergency character with the cataclysmic situation which developed after the World War,” Mr. Deutsch declared. “There seems to be no reason to doubt that the East European Jews are to be further victims of Nazi virulence. They have no other recourse except to the League of Nations. The extension of the Nansen passport system beyond the limits of Russians and Armenians, for whom it was created, is an imperative need of the moment.”
