Mrs. Golda Meir, the new secretary general of Premier Levi Eshkol’s Mapai Party, said yesterday that, as the nation’s largest party, Mapai must demand sacrifices from the people.
“Mapai must stop being nice, and have the courage to insist that individuals and groups accept sacrifices for the common good ” Mrs. Meir declared. She made the comments during a visit to Mapai headquarters where her predecessor, Reuven Barkatt, introduced her to the department heads. She also reiterated her belief that the current alignment between Mapai and Achdut Avoda would lead to an eventual merger of the two parties.
