Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, who has been heading her country’s General Assembly delegation here since the Assembly convened last month, suddenly canceled all engagements today, and is returning home tomorrow. Mrs. Meir had been scheduled to stay on another week.
This morning, Mrs. Meir conferred with Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold. While the visit to the United Nations Chief was termed officially as a “courtesy farewell” call, the Israeli Foreign Minister was believed to have discussed with Mr. Hammarskjold the freezing of the Arab delegations’ hostile attitude toward Israel here, as expressed by Arab spokesmen following her offer of immediate Arab-Israel peace talks “without preconditions.”
(Israeli circles in New York speculated on the possibility that Mrs. Meir’s sudden decision to return home earlier than expected may be due to the fact that both the Israeli coalition Government and the country’s dominant political party, Mapai, may be facing a crisis because of the various probes into the circumstances under which Pinhas Lavon resigned from the post of Defense Minister in 1955.)
