Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, signed a treaty of commerce and navigation with Uruguay, and a payments agreement, yesterday, providing for most favored nations treatment between the two countries. Following a reception in her honor tendered by the Israel Embassy, Mrs. Meir left for Chile on the next leg of her South American tour.
Mrs. Meir attracted popular widespread interest during her visit to Uruguay, marked by immediate assembly of friendly crowds whenever she appeared on the street. Cries of “Long Live Israel” greeted her on such appearances. The national radio lauded her visit. Before leaving for Chile, Mrs. Meir dined with Foreign Minister Martinez Montero with whom she exchanged toasts.
In Chile, she was met at the Cerrillos airport in Santiago today by German Vergara, Chilean Foreign Minister, Elizer Durin, Israel Ambassador to Chile and 1, 000 members of the local Jewish community. The Chilean Foreign Minister expressed the “great satisfaction” of his Government and of President Allesandri at Mrs. Meir’s arrival for a six-day stay as official guest of Chile. She reviewed a guard of honor of the Chilean Air Force while a military band played the national anthem of both countries.
