Fifty women delegates from 28 countries, many of them new African nations, were the guests of Israel’s Foreign Minister Golda Meir yesterday at Mrs. Meir’s annual luncheon for the distaff side of the United Nations diplomatic corps.
Israel’s role in extending aid to many new nations was highlighted by a number of the delegates present; Mrs. Meir extended a particular welcome to women representing their governments here for the first time. These included representatives of Cyprus, Nigeria, Senegal, Guinea, Togo, Nepal and Burma.
Representing the guests, Miss Angie Brooks, Assistant Secretary of State of Liberia, delivered the toast in response to a welcoming speech by Mrs. Meir. Mrs. Nonny Wright, of Denmark, one of the guests present, noted the advances made by women in diplomacy when she pointed out that, as a guest at Mrs. Meir’s luncheon of this type four years ago, only about a half dozen women diplomats were present.
