Arthur J. Goldberg, the first Jew in American history to serve as Ambassador to the United Nations, resigned that post today and President Johnson accepted the resignation, the White House announced.
Mr. Goldberg will be replaced by George Ball, former Undersecretary of State, who served for many years in the State Department. Mr. Goldberg indicated he resigned for “personal reasons.” He will continue as UN envoy until early June to ensure a smooth transition. President Johnson described Mr. Goldberg, who is 59, as a “dedicated public servant.” He began his UN assignment in mid-1965. Previously he had been a member of the United States Supreme Court and before that had been Secretary of Labor. Mr. Ball had considerable dealings with the Arab-Israel issue when he was No. 2 man in the State Department from 1961 to 1966.
