The tragedy of modern life was attributed to the lack of successful inter-human relationship by Rabbi Samuel H. Goldenson of Temple Emanu-El in an address before the teachers and officers of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church yesterday afternoon. Rabbi Goldenson was introduced by the Reverend Philip C. Jones, one of the three associate pastors of the Madison Avenue church. Mr. Jones announced that the classes of the church recently have made a study of Jewish customs and prayers.
“A proper understanding of the universe leads me not to be tolerant but to be understanding; not to be tolerant but to be human; not to be tolerant but to be respectful,” Rabbi Goldenson said.
He reminded the teachers that the faiths and heritages of each one were not personal choice. “We all act as if we believe that they are,” Rabbi Goldenson declared. “That is the source of our difficulty.”
