Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Zionist Organization, today expressed satisfaction over the approval yesterday by the Zionist Actions Committee of his plan to widen the world Zionist movement by facilitating group affiliation with that movement.
As a result of this decision. Dr. Goldmann said, important American and South American Jewish bodies are expected shortly to join the Zionist movement. The Actions Committee also approved elimination of the double Shekel for Israeli voters to the World Zionist Congress. Under the new arrangement, non-Israelis will have 62 percent of the seats in the future Zionist Congresses.
Dr. Goldmann revealed today that an agreement has been reached with the Israel Government under which the Jewish Agency will be relieved of liability for Government loans advanced for settling new immigrants.
Meanwhile, the Jewish Agency-Government of Israel Coordinating Committee met today under the chairmanship of Prime Minister David Ben Gurion. The committee is composed of four representatives of the Agency executive and an equal number of Government ministers. The meeting approved the Actions Committee’s immigration quota for the current year, with a provision that the quota remain open and unlimited in case of emergency developments.
A subcommittee was named by the coordinating body to study the Jewish Agency’s claim for exemption from customs duties. Under the Zionist movement’s charter here. Agency imports are tax exempt. However, Parliament cancelled that exemption through a bill enacted in 1957, and the Agency’s executive is challenging that cancellation as “illegal and absurd.”
