An international loan to assist in the emigration of Jews from the Soviet Union to Israel will be needed, should the Soviet Government decide to permit Jews to leave the USSR, Dr. Nahum Goldmann declared at a press conference here.
The president of the World Zionist movement, who was the principal speaker at a huge meeting opening the United Israel Campaign for this year, said that funds from Israel, or even from the Jews all over the world, would not suffice to finance a Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union. “An international loan of hundreds of millions of dollars would be required, “he stated.
Dr. Goldmann declared that he favors the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and West Germany. He emphasized the fact that Israel’s economy has benefited greatly from the reparations paid by Bonn to the Israel Government. He also pointed out that even those who had criticized him for his reparations talks with the leaders of the West German Government have benefited from the reparations payments.
