Chancellor Konrad Adenauer of the West German Republic met with the leaders of major American Jewish organizations and other notables at a reception given in his honor by Dr. Nahum Goldmann at his home here yesterday. The German leader reiterated his conviction that it was his country’s moral obligation to redress the wrongs committed under Nazism.
Among the other guests attending the reception were Bernard M. Baruch, Prof. Walter Hallstein, Undersecretary of the German Foreign Ministry, Dr. Heinz Krekeler, German Ambassador to the United States, Maurice Fisher, Israel Ambassador to Turkey, and Avraham Harman, Israel Consul General in New York.
Welcoming the Chancellor, Dr. Goldmann expressed satisfaction with the smooth operations of the Bonn-Israel reparations agreement, but informed the Chancellor that a serious lag in implementing West Germany’s Indemnification Law was creating hardships for thousands of claimants, and urged that steps be taken to speed up the carrying out of important provisions of the law.
