Dr. Gregory Goldstein, a leading Jewish activist in Tbilisi, was sentenced to one year in prison today on a charge of “parasitism,” the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry reported here. The judge also ordered Goldstein to no longer participate in the committee monitoring the Soviet Union’s compliance with the human rights provisions of the Helsinki agreements. Goldstein, 46, and his brother, Isai, both physicians, applied to emigrate to Israel in 1971. The Tbilisi prosecutor has now asked to see the dossier of Isai, which could mean that he also faces a charge of parasitism, according to the SSSJ. Goldstein’s sentence came in the wake of news that Pavel Abramavich of Moscow is due to go on trial on charges of “parasitism.”
