Two hundred children have been registered for “Camp Vacation,” which opens at the Y. M. and Y. W. H. A. Monday afternoon. The indoor camp is being conducted for the seventh consecutive year under the direction of Belle F. Bernstein, camp director and women’s activities director.
The purpose of the project is to bring into its fold two hundred boys and girls ranging from four to sixteen years of age who can not afford a camp vacation and give them as full and complete a camp program as possible, using the facilities of the Community Center, and engaging in weekly outdoor activities.
During the past seven years the camp has grown into the major summer activity of the “Y.” Daily and regular periods are held. The children engage in athletics, are taught arts and crafts, dancing, music, newspaper making, scout activities, etc. Milk and crackers are served daily and showers are supplied on the roof. One day a week is devoted to either an outdoor hike, visit to New York, amusement center, or the movies.
The season of six weeks will culminate in a gala pageant on the final night.
A super-senior group has been formed for the first time. Members of this group will not only be part of the camp, but will participate as counsellors-in-training. This experience will enable the members to secure positions as counsellors next summer.
