Prime Minister Count Bethlen and Admiral Horthy, Regent of Hungary, were called to account for their attacks on the merchant class in an interpellation introduced into parliament by Deputy Paul Sandor.
The interpellation, which is couched in sharp terms, criticises the regent of Hungary for insulting remarks concerning the merchant class, made in an address he delivered several days ago at the University of Budapest.
Deputy Sandor urged the Prime Minister to withdraw Horthy’s insulting remarks and to state in parliament whether it is the intention of the present government to introduce into the country’s economic life the principle of race discrimination. The recent attacks upon the merchant class in the country was viewed in liberal circles as aimed principally against Jewish merchants.
In the meantime, the Hungarian Telegraphic Agency issued a statement on behalf of Count Klebelsberg, Minister of Education, in which it is declared that Regent Horthy’s address was “misunderstood.”
