The Information Service of the Governing Christian Democratic Union today supported State Secretary Hans Globke’s claim that he had aided the Jews by remaining in his post in the Ministry of the Interior under the Nazi regime. At the same time, the CDU accused the Social Democratic party of aiding the Communist German press agitation “which, in connection with the Eichmann case, has been running in high gear since July 1960.”
The CDU service charged that by “misinterpreting” the activities of State Secretary Globke in the Nazi Ministry of Interior, the Social Democratic Party had aided Soviet propaganda and had selected “a bad and useless election campaign issue.” Dr. Globke is accused by the SDP of interpreting the Nuremberg Laws against Jews.
The Christian Democratic agency said that Dr. Globke had been a member of the resistance movement under the Nazis and that opponents of the Hitler regime had requested him to remain in office. His position had enabled him to give timely warning of criminal measures planned by the Nazis, the CDU service stated.
