A deputy Cabinet minister accused the government today of not doing enough to close the social and educational gap in Israel. According to Dr. Avner Sciaki, deputy Minister of Education who is a member of the National Religious Party, “the social gap is widening daily” and while national leaders are aware of the problem, they are not doing enough to solve it.
Dr. Sciaki, who is of Oriental origin, addressed more than 200 delegates attending the World Conference of Moroccan Jews here. He was greeted with applause when he criticized the priorities in the present national budget. A great deal of attention was paid to the social gap at the last Zionist Congress but not much has been done since, he claimed.
“Perhaps some people aren’t really interested in the educational and social progress of the Eastern communities,” he added. According to Dr. Sciaki, if present national policies continue, the social and educational gap will not be closed in 100 years.
