Great alarm is felt by the Austrian Jews over the appeal issued today by the Dollfuss government to Nazi stuent associations and sports clubs asking them to join the government forces in finghting against Socialists, still holding their shellbattered positions. It is feared that if the Nazis agree and join the Dollfuss troops they many use the arms and ammunition obtained from the government to strtengthen their own forces and either revolt against Dollfuss or force the present regine to enter into a coalition with the Nazis.

It has been definitely established that a number of disguised Nazis have already joined both the Socialists and the pro-government troops in order to proing the civil war still raging, increase the chaos in the country and also to secure ammunition.

(From Munich tonight, Theodore Habicht, Hitler’s “inspector general for Austria,” warned Austrian Nazis on Pain of expulsion from the organization, not to go to the aid of the Dollfuss government in its war with the Socialists. “Alien powers,” Habicht said over the powerful radio, were fighting battles over German soil. He ordered the Nazis to wait watchfully, as serting that victory of Dollfuss over the Socialists would not prevent his eventual fall and the rise of the Mazis to power.)

ANTI-SEMITIC DRIVE

A number of groups supporting the Dollfuss regime have in the last few days developed, with the help of the official government press and radio, a bitter anti-Semitic campaign among the Austrian workers. claiming that the Jewish Socialist leaders who headed the revolt have fied from the country in luxurious automobiles, leaving the workers to die on the barricades. Yesterday, Vice Chancellor Emil Fey, who spoke on the radio over a country-wide network, told the listeners that Dr. Julius Deutsch, Jewish leader of the Socialist Schutzbund, now fighting for life, fied to Czecheslovakia with “his pockets full of money” despite the fact that Dr, Deutsch is known to be in active command of the Vienna revolutionaries and the stubborn defense of the municipal apartment houses is attributed to his skill. However, the government is in control of the radio and a strict censorship has been established, leaving dissemination of news entirely in the hands of the goernment.

GOVERNMENT PROPAGANDA

This government propaganda, coupled with Socialist indignation over the offer of the Jewish war veterans to help the government.

Reports from the Austrian provinces indicate that the Jews did not suffer particularly, except as the rest of the population in the fighting areas suffered. But a panic was created among the Jews in the provinces today when Nazi airplanes appeared over the province of Tyrol scattering leaflets which declared that the Tyrol would soon be occupled by Nazis, who from Tyrol, would march and occupy all of Austria.

REJECT JEWISH SUPPORT

The Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned today that when a Jewish delegatio visited the government yesterday they received assurances that the government: did not contemplate any specific anti-Jewish measures in the country. General Sommer, president of the Jewish war veterans association, today issued a communique to the press, however, declaring that while he had offered the services of the veterans to the government, authorities had made no use of the offer.

Unconfirmed reports in the Austrian anti-Semitic press declare that the radical colony of foreign emigrants, which existed in Vienna is disppearing and the members are leaving the country chiefly for Czechoslovakia, fearing that the government plans to withdraw their right of asylum.

American Jewish students and doctors pursuing post-graduate studies are hurriedly leaving Austria for home. Many have recelved cables directing them to leave at once. The American Jewish eolony here is particularly indignant over the sudden search of premises in the american colony carried out by the police on the pretext of a hunt for suspected Ccommunists and ammunition.
