Some 50,000 persons attended the funeral today of Tunis Grand Rabbi David Bembaron, who died here yester day at the age of 71. President at the funeral were a large number of Christians and Moslems. All Jewish shops in this city were closed during the funeral.
Prince Chedli, son of the Bey of Tunis, represented his father at the funeral. The members of the Tunisian Government, Moslems all, headed by Premier Tahar Ben Ammar, were present. Roger Seydou, French Deputy Resident General, also attended. Both Premier Ben Ammar and M. Seydou eulogized the Grand Rabbi, who had been the recipient of honors from both the French and Tunisian Governments.
A noted Talmudist, Rabbi Bembaron was president of the Rabbinical Tribunal of Tunis before he was named Grand Rabbi. The family received condolences from the French Resident General and the Bey, as well as from hundreds of French, Moslem and Jewish leaders of this country. It was announced at the funeral that the Jewish community would inscribe his name in the Jewish National Fund’s Golden Book.
Rabbi Bembaron had been ailing for a long time before his death. He underwent a delicate eye operation recently. However, his death was caused by a heart attack.
