An international committee of experts, to be appointed by Great Britain with the approval of the Mandates Commission of the League of Nations, to investigate the Arab-Jewish situation in Palestine, is being contemplated by Great Britain. A note to this effect has been received by the Secretariat of the League of Nations, inquiring as to whether the Mandates Commission would object to such a committee. The Commission is expected to act on the request at its present session.
The proposed committee would proceed to Palestine as soon as possible so that its report may be ready for the extraordinary session of the Mandates Commission next Spring. It is planned that this committee will supplement the work of the present British Inquiry Commission. It is quite likely that if the proposed committee is named, it will relieve Britain of some of the responsibility resting upon it if the inquiry is limited to the present British Commission.
Reported criticism by other powers, particularly Italy, concerning the present investigation, is said to be behind the sudden decision of the British Government to name an international commission. The Italian press claims that Great Britian hopes to bury the fundamentals of the Palestine situation in a mass of unimportant details.
