One of the decisive battles of the world may be fought over Palestine, Lord Strabolgi, Chief Labor Whip in the House of Lords and author of a book on the Graf Spee battle, declared today in an address at Harrogate.
Lord Strabolgi said that one of the main German war aims was undoubtedly to obtain by trickery or force access to the Mosul oil fields. Such an attempt, he pointed out, could be outflanked by a strong British force in Palestine.
Palestine, Lord Strabolgi said, would also be of the greatest importance in the long-distance aerial warfare which would feature such an attempt. He voiced the conviction that the Nazis would attempt a great drive through Turkey to the east as an ultimate threat to India.
