Greek Ambassador Menelas D. Alexandrakis yesterday advised representatives of two major Jewish organizations that his government had decided “not to extend diplomatic recognition at this time” to the Palestine Liberation Organization.
Herman Edelsberg, director of B’nai B’rith’s International Council, and Hyman Bookbinder, Washington representative of the American Jewish Committee, following a meeting with Alexandrakis, said the Ambassador had disavowed news reports that Greece was ready to give official sanction to the PLO. A PLO leader had recently met with the Greek Foreign Minister, reportedly to seek formal acceptance of his group. Alexandrakis added that his government had also rejected a PLO request to open an office in Athens.
