Greece’s defense minister plans to make a three-day trip to Israel starting Wednesday. Akis Tsohatzopoulos plans to push for creation of a regional defense group that will bring together Greece, Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Cyprus. Greece’s ties with Israel have been strained since the Jewish state forged a military cooperation pact in 1996 with Turkey, Greece’s longtime rival. Israeli officials are hoping to get a portion of the $16 billion Greece has designated for military purchases during the next five years.
