Archbishop Theoklitos, Primate of Greece, today sharply denounced anti-Semitism, and announced a plan to remove from the New Testament passages that offend Jewish sensibilities or provoke anti-Semitism.Speaking at a news conference here, the Archbishop condemned “those well-known anti-Semitic incidents which have filled every Christian soul with anguish and indignation.”
The church leader said that, prior to next October’s meeting at the Holy Synod, consultations will be held bout eliminating passages provoking anti-Semitism from the New Testament.The consultations, he declared, will be held with the Ecumenical patriarchate of Istanbul and with sister Eastern Orthodox Churches, and the subject will be placed on the Synod’s agenda if the reactions to the plan were found favorable.
