Andrei Gromyko, the Soviet Minister of Foreign Affairs, declared today in an interview in the Rome Communist daily. Unita, that “the Government of Israel is obliged to implement the Security Council resolution of Nov.22, 1967 and, first of all, the resolution’s proviso on the withdrawal of troops from all the Arab territories occupied by the aggressors. If it is not done, Israel will, sooner or later be held responsible for this policy.”
Mr. Gromyko’s statement, distributed here by the Soviet Mission, declared that the USSR is a “Mediterranean power” and is therefore interested in the peace and security of the entire Mediterranean region. “In the Middle East,” Mr. Gromyko was quoted as saying, “Israel is performing its role of a gendarme. It is trying to suppress the national liberation movement and eliminate the progressive regime in a number of Arab states.”
