A sports center memorializing the 11 Israeli athletes murdered in Munich during the Summer Olympics will be built at an Israeli kibbutz if a newly formed organization here can raise $150,000. A Minneapolis Israel Olympic Memorial Fund has been created by Mayor Charles Stenvig, who visited Israel two years ago and said he was impressed with Israelis’ energy, dedication and determination.
The complex would include facilities for track and field, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and other activities, and would be known as the Minneapolis Sports Center in Honor of the 11 Martyred Olympic Team Members, The fund drive, headquartered at Midwest Federal Savings and Loan, is chaired by Harold Greenwood, Jr., of the bank, with Mayor Stenvig as honorary chairman. The large majority of the civic leaders, businessmen and athletes participating in the fund drive are non-Jewish, according to the Minneapolis Federation for Jewish Service.
