Group Initiates Effort to Spur Jewish Schools

A drive to obtain larger registration and increased attendance at Talmud Torahs and other Jewish religious schools will be opened today, the first day of Jewish Education Week. The campaign is under the sponsorship of the Jewish Education Association of New York, of which Judge Otto A. Rosalsky is acting president. The drive coincides with the opening of classes at religious schools today.

According to the proclamation signed by Judge Rosalsky, Samuel Rottenberg, chairman of the Board of Directors, and Bernard Semel, honorary secretary, the week will be marked by special meetings of parents with principals and teachers of Hebrew schools throughout Greater New York. On the week’s program are addresses on the subject of Jewish education, to be made at meetings of various organizations, and sermons by rabbis in their synagogues. Ivriah, women’s division of the Jewish Education Association, will cooperate with local schools in the distribution of specially prepared literature for parents.

The proclamation issued by the Jewish Education Association reads, in part, as follows:

“To the Jews of Greater New York:

“In a world that is changing, in a world where people are faced with the challenge of discrimination and persecution, what can we give our children that will be of greatest help to them?

“Our answer is: the faith and traditions of our fathers.

“In a changing world, let us cling to the things that have withstood the severest shocks of the past. In the din of new slogans, in the struggle of conflicting standards, let us hold fast to the ancient and simple virtues of our fathers. Let us, by all means, move forward but the ground we move on should be stable….

“To emphasize the necessity of providing Jewish education to the children of our community, the Jewish Education Association here by proclaims the week beginning October 7, 1934, as Jewish Education Week.”
