The fourth annual Study Tour of Israel, sponsored by the Inter-University Committee on Israel–a division of the America-Israel Society–left by plane today with 48 university faculty members and Christian clergymen, it was announced by Mayor Theodore R. McKeldin of Baltimore, president of the Society.
“It is appropriate,” said Mayor McKeldin, “that our two peoples, sharing as they do a common spiritual and democratic heritage, should meet in this people-to-people program. Our study tour to Israel, “he emphasized, “is designed to probe in some depth the historic background and contemporary significance of Israel. The group will study subjects varying from the Dead Sea Scrolls to the modern kibbutzim, and from Israel’s ancient cultural contribution to the world, to her present partnership with the new nations of Africa and Asia.”
The group of distinguished leaders, coming from 13 states and the District of Columbia, represent the major religious bodies of the United States and the educators are primarily in the fields of religion and the social sciences. Their program of the tour is divided between an extensive touring of the land and a week of intensive study in a seminar at the Hebrew University, The Seminar, devoted to “Contemporary Israel in the Perspective of History, “will be opened by Dr. Elianu Elath, president of the Hebrew University and also president of the Israel-America Society.
