As Jews the world over are observing the first anniversary of the death of the Chofetz Chaim, American Jews will pay tribute to his memory by writing a communal Sefer Torah (Scroll of Law) in his name. This, according to historic tradition, is a mark of high merit and a fitting tribunal to the saintly rabbi.
The Chofetz Chaim Sefer Torah will be deposited in a special ark at the synagogue near his grave. Within the same ark will also be placed a golden book containing the names of all subscribers and participants. The proceeds of this fund will go toward the maintenance of educational institutions which the Chofetz Chaim founded.
An American committee, headed by M. Hirsch Manischewitz and of which Rabbi Moses M. Yoshor is secretary, is sponsoring the fund under the name of the Chofetz Chaim Memorial Society.
