A growing desire among Jewish youths in America to serve the Jewish community as rabbis was reported here today by Rabbi Robert L. Katz, director of admissions of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, ?apon his return from a trip throughout the country.
Rabbi Katz conferred with key leaders of Jewish communities of Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and other cities on the nation-wide need for rabbis serve as spiritual leaders of Liberal Jewish congregations, He reported that an interest in the rabbinate was especially evident among U.S. Army and Navy veterans who saw action in World War II.
“Their interest in the rabbinate,” Rabbi Katz said, “seems to be a response to the Impact of war and violence and ever-present danger. They underwent a long period of intense soul-searching, and the reaction to war somehow expressed itself in a desire to lead and be of service.”
