Oswald Garrison Villard, in a signed editorial in the issue of The Nation, out today, warmly greets the appointment of Dr. Ernest H. Gruening as head of the newly created Division of Territories and Island Possessions by President Roosevelt. Dr. Gruening has been a member of the Nation staff since 1920.
“It seems really too good to be true,” says Mr. Villard, “that this important position has been given to one who is ideally fitted for it—and in saying this I do not think that I am biased by my years of editorial association with him on the Nation, and our personal friendship. In the first place, he is an excellent linguist, speaking French, German and Spanish. Next, his whole career would seem to have led right up to this post, since he has been specializing on the Latin American relations of the United States ever since he first joined the staff of the Nation in 1920.”
Mr. Villard points out that no one else brought such persistence and fidelity to the study of the Caribbean situation and that he helped bring about a reversal of American policy toward Central and South America.
