It was stated that in Catholic circles these bills have caused dissatisfaction, since they recognize the validity of marriages performed outside the Catholic faith and permit of divorce. The Catholics had hoped that after the agreement with the Vatican, divorce would have been abolished in Italy. Surprise was also expressed in these circles that the laws to be enacted will give great encouragement to non-Catholic religions, raising them to a status of official recognition.
