Historical traditions bind together the Jewish people the world over, and not national ties and beliefs, declared Philip Guedella, the noted English biographer, at a luncheon given in his honor on Wednesday by Henry Hurwitz, editor of the “Menorah Journal.”
“Jews have a deep sense of the past,” he said, “which fits them politically, to earn the respect of others, and not, as certain Jews have done in Germany, to take on a jingoistic-patriotic coloration. And in spiritual matters the principles of democracy are not applicable—the Jew must have fixed standards in a world of shifting values.”
