The revelation that the Havaarah office in Germany has not made a single transfer of Jewish capital to Palestine in the last twelve months, was made in an official statement to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency representative by the Haavarah headquarters here.
In the statement, the Haavarah discloses that “since February 7, 1935, not a single deposit has been accepted in Germany by the Haavarah office for transfer to Palestine.” This is explained by the fact that not enough German goods have been sold in Palestine under the transfer agreement to meet the requirements of the Reichsbank for further transactions. The Haavarah has, however, according to the statement, so far enabled 1,600 Jewish families to take out their capital from Germany under the transfer agreement since it has come into force.
The capital so far taken out through the Haavarah is given as over 26,000,000 Marks. This includes funds taken out for the Keren Hayesod and other Zionist institutions in Palestine. At present, the Haavarah limits its activities to registering applicants and assigning the numbers indicating the order in which their turn comes in case further transfer of capital will be made possible from Germany under the Haavarah agreement. Applications now amount to 27,000,000 Marks. These are filed in the Haavarah office, but no action can be taken regarding them for the time being.
