A resolution urging Congress to appropriate funds to assure effective United States participation in the United Nations expanded Technical Assistance Program for Underdeveloped Regions, was adopted here yesterday at the midwinter conference of Hadassah, the women’s Zionist organization. The U.S. co-sponsored the expanded UN aid program.
It was also announced at the session, the last of the annual four-day meeting, that the 1958 Henrietta Szold Award would be presented to Israel Premier David Ben Gurion at a ceremony in Jerusalem. The award, which gives recognition to humanitarian services, carries a $1,000 cash gift.
The organization has chartered the Israeli passenger liner S.S. Jerusalem for a special Hadassah pilgrimage to Israel next May, Mrs. Herman Shulman, national chairman of the pilgrimage, announced. More than 400 Hadassah leaders are expected to make the voyage.
Sen. Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota told the 750 delegates at the parley that the Bagdad Pact should become the “beginnings of an organization for the planned economic development and expansion of all Middle East countries, including Israel. ” He suggested once again the formation of a Middle East Development Agency under United Nations sponsorship, with both United States and Soviet participation.
