The eighteenth anniversary of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, will be nationally celebrated by Hadassah chapters during the week of Purim, which begins today. Purim, or the Feast of Lots, commemorates the rescue of the Jews from annihilation in Persia.
In celebration of the holiday and the anniversary, women Zionists in all parts of the country will present pageants, plays and musical events, linking the story of Queen Esther, whose Hebrew name was Hadassah, with the modern Hadassah, comprising 50,000 American women devoted to giving and teaching health to the people of Palestine.
This anniversary is of special significance to Hadassah because the Hebrew symbols for eighteen also spell “life” in Hebrew. Scores of speakers will address meetings on the medical and health work of Hadassah. The first big event of Hadassah’s eighteenth year will be the opening of the Peter J. Schweitzer Hospital in Tiberias, Palestine. It will be Hadassah’s fifth hospital. It will be formally opened on May 1 by Mrs. Schweitzer, of this city, widow of the founder, who will go to Palestine for the occasion. More than fifty institutions are included in Hadassah’s health system, which ministers to all creeds.
