Hadassah Conference Asks U.S. Government to Grant Loans to Israel.

A resolution asking the U.S. Government for allocation of loans to Israel from the Development Loan Fund and the Mutual Security program, was adopted here today at the closing session of the four-day Hadassah mid-winter conference attended by delegates from all over the country. Another resolution called for the liberalization of American immigration laws.

Expressing “wholehearted support” of the American economic aid program as recommended by the Administration, and emphasizing that Hadassah considers this program an essential aspect of United States foreign policy, the resolution said:

“Hadassah expresses its gratification at the generous assistance consistently granted to Israel through the Mutual Security Program. Hadassah endorses the view that economic aid must be commensurate not only with the demands made upon the abundant resources of America, but with the obligation of the American Government and people to assist the underdeveloped nations of the world to raise the standard of living of their people.

“The funds which have been made available to the State of Israel under the Mutual Security program have helped develop its industry, its agricultural potential, and exploit its natural resources for the benefit of all its citizens, thus demonstrating Israel’s will and capacity to use American aid effectively and productively.

“Hadassah believes it important also to point out in this connection that Israel, a true democracy in a strategic and restless area of the world, has demonstrated itself to be a small but valiant ally of Western interests and objectives. Hadassah. therefore, expresses the hope that the incoming Congress will approve the Administration’s request for renewed funds from the Development Loan Fund and the Mutual Security Program, and will allocate loans under these programs to Israel with traditional American generosity and friendship, and in consonance with those considerations of prudence and morality which must guide American foreign policy in this fateful time in our history.”

The resolution on American immigration laws reads: ‘Hadassah is proud of the great tradition of welcoming and giving asylum to those who must flee from lands of oppression and persecution. This policy has not only made America a symbol of freedom, but has been a real factor in America’s greatness and prosperity. Therefore be it resolved, that Hadassah go on record as supporting all efforts to liberalise our immigration laws, to the end that men and women seeking to build in freedom shall continue to find that opportunity in the land of freedom.”
