Hadassah today disassociated itself from the political program of Dr. Judah L. Magnes, chairman of the Hadassah Council in Palestine, who registered with the Department of Justice in Washington last week as an agent for the Ihud Association of Jerusalem. The Department’s announcement was quoted as saying that Ihud is an organization which “favors the establishment of a bi-national Arab-Jewish state in Palestine.”
The Hadassah statement, released by Mrs. Samuel W. Halprin, national president, said that the step was taken to “avoid any confusion in the public mind between Dr. Magnes’ position as chairman of the Hadassah Council of Palestine, a poet in which he has given distinguished and selfless service in the supervision of Hadassah’s countrywide system of health and medical institutions of Palestine, and his activities on behalf of Ihud.”
The statement pointed out that “Hadassah has consistently fought for the establishment of an independent Jewish state and will continue to bend all its best efforts to secure the firm rooting of that State within the territorial boundaries set forth in the Palestine resolution of the United Nations General Assembly of Nov. 29, 1947.”
