Mayor Abba Khoushy of Haifa proposed last night a five-day work week with five days payment in place of Israel’s present six-day work week as a step toward solution of Israel’s current economic slump. He was speaking at the annual meeting of the Haifa Chamber of Commerce. Replying to an argument that a cut in wages would decrease demand, he said that excess production should be diverted to export markets.
Seven Israeli exporters received awards today from President Zalman Shazar for contributions to Israel’s export drive. The President called for greater efficiency, devotion and productivity on industry’s part. The award winners were in chemicals, pharmaceuticals, diamonds, cosmetics, fashion and metallurgy.
Road and construction equipment made by the metal division of Solel Boneh, an affiliate of the Histadrut, Israel’s Labor Federation, is competing successfully with European products in the Asian and African markets, officials reported here today. They said orders for such equipment for 1967 already total $330,000, which is $50,000 more than for all of 1966. The equipment includes rollers, vibrators, compressors and bumpers with swiveling bases.
