Nearly half a million children, of whom a considerable percentage are Jewish, are homeless and starving in the famine districts of Ukrainia, according to data collected by the Ukranian Central Commission for Relief of the Homeless. Registration completed by the Commission in November 10 shows that the number of homeless children amounts to 486,000, the majority of them orphans.
The state institutions are caring for 198,000 children Seventy-two thousand orphans are kept in children’s homes. The remaining 226,9000, left to their fate, are obliged to wander about the streets.
The Ukrainian Central Commission for Relief of the Homeless, confronted with these appalling figures, finds the situation too great for them to cope with, and it has sent a stirring appeal to the All Russian Sovnarcom (Council of the People’s Commissions) for assistance.
